History of Indian Head Massage

For over a thousand years Indians have valued the relaxation and healing qualities of head massage or ‘Champissage’ as it is officially called. (The Hindi word for head massage is "Champi" and is the origin of the word ‘shampoo’.)  Daily head massages within families was a matter of course and was (and for some still is) always offered by the barber after a hair cut.

There is dispute as to whether it was Mr Narendra Mehta or Mr Maeda who first introduced the treatment to the UK.  The story goes that in the 1970s each was disappointed at not receiving head massage after a hair cut so they developed the therapy and extended it to include the back, arms and face.  The treatment has subsequently become extremely popular because it can be given over clothing and offered in a variety of locations.

Ear Candling

What is Ear Candling

£40.00 approx 45 mins

Also known as Hopi or Auricular Therapy.  Hopi ear candles are made by Biosun, the only EU standard candles on the market.  Each candle is a linen tube impregnated with beeswax, honey extract and essential oil of St John's Wort, Chamomile and Sage. Once lit the candle is painlessly placed in the ear to form a seal, thereby enabling the ingredients to vapourise and create convectional airflow towards the first chamber of the ear (rather like the effect of a chimney).  A massage like effect is generated on the eardrum and auditory canal, this balances pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses and thus enables wax and other impurities to be drawn out of the ear.

Treatment

Ear candling is very relaxing and calming therapy and is a perfect alternative for people who have found syringing uncomfortable.

Treatment begins with a short consultation about ear conditions and any medication followed by an ear examination.  The client then lies down on their side, with their head supported on a pillow so the auditory canal is vertical.

Next the head is held gently whilst the first ear is treated; the candle is lit and the non-burning end is placed gently into the outer ear passage to create a seal - this lasts approximately 10 minutes during which time healing energies are received through the head.  The candle is extinguished and any residue candle content is gently removed.

Treatment to the second ear is given and then cleaned, followed a brief facial massage to improve circulation and energy flow.

None of the candle residue goes into the ear as most deposits evaporate and are carried away through the candle ‘chimney’, however some condensed wax residue may be found in the unburned candle.  Candles can be examined to identify the volume of excess wax and ascertain whether further treatments are needed.

History of  Ear Candling

Hopi or Auricular Therapy is taken from the Hopi Indians of north-east Arizona who lend their name (meaning ‘peaceful people’) to this treatment which is used to treat many conditions of the ear, nose and throat area to clear negative energies from the head and aura.

No specific date is given as to when the Hopi (the oldest Pueblo people) first used ear candles in medicinal ceremonies and initiations.   There is also evidence of native ear candling from Siberia, Asia and North and South America but once again we have no definitive date as to the origins.

Since 1985 Biosun have been researching the use of Ear candles and re-establishing their popularity.
